AI & Automation Policy

Artificial intelligence and automated tools can help us work more effectively, but they never replace editorial judgment, professional ethics or human accountability. At NewsPrism.co.uk, we treat AI as a supporting instrument — not a reporter, not an editor, and certainly not an author. Every piece of content published on this site carries human responsibility from start to finish.

How digital tools may support our work

Our editorial team uses a range of digital and AI-assisted tools to improve accuracy, efficiency and accessibility across the newsroom. These tools are deployed under the direct supervision of editorial staff and may assist with:

  • Research and analysis — identifying patterns in public datasets, summarising lengthy documents or flagging relevant source material for journalists to evaluate.
  • Editing and formatting — suggesting structural improvements, checking consistency of style, correcting typographical errors and preparing content for different platforms or devices.
  • Translation and localisation — rendering content into other languages or adapting it for regional audiences, always reviewed by a fluent speaker before publication.
  • Metadata and headlines — generating headline options, SEO metadata, alt-text suggestions and categorisation tags that editors may choose to use, adapt or reject.
  • Summaries and transcription — producing short summaries of longer articles or transcribing audio and video interviews, with the original material retained for verification.
  • Content review and compliance checks — scanning for potential factual inconsistencies, rights metadata or policy flags that editors then investigate and resolve.

The human guarantee

No story, analysis, explainer, opinion piece or brief reaches our readers without being reviewed by a qualified human editor. Every item published on NewsPrism.co.uk is read, checked and approved by a member of our editorial team before it goes live. That includes content where digital tools have been used in preparation. Our Editorial Policy sets out the standards that apply to every piece of content, regardless of how it was produced or assisted.

AI tools are never given authority to make editorial decisions, set coverage priorities, determine tone or approve content for publication. Those responsibilities rest entirely with journalists and editors whose names and credentials are published on our Our Team page.

Strict prohibitions

We draw a firm line around practices that undermine trust, accuracy or originality. Under no circumstances may AI tools be used to:

  • Fabricate quotes, sources, interviews, bylines, author experience, expert profiles, false staff identities or credentials.
  • Generate claims presented as factual without human verification against primary sources.
  • Produce images, audio or video that could reasonably mislead readers about the nature of the content — where AI-generated or AI-modified media is published, it is clearly labelled as such.
  • Create mass-produced, low-value content designed primarily to manipulate search rankings, generate advertising revenue or deceive algorithms.

Any AI-assisted claim that appears in our reporting is verified using the same sourcing standards applied to all editorial content, as described in our Fact-Checking Policy.

Disclosure practice

Where digital tools have played a meaningful role in preparing an article — for example, in transcription, formatting or headline generation — we include a brief disclosure. The standard form reads: “This article was prepared with the support of digital editing tools and reviewed by a human editor before publication.” This note may appear at the foot of the article or alongside the author credit, depending on context. It is never hidden or made difficult to find.

Readers who have questions about the use of AI or automation in a specific piece of content are welcome to contact our editorial team for a fuller explanation. We take those inquiries seriously and respond promptly.

Accountability and review

Our Standards & Fact-Checking Lead, Oliver Reeves, oversees the application of this policy across all content areas. Any concerns about AI use, disclosure or compliance should be directed to him in the first instance. This policy is reviewed regularly as technology evolves, and we commit to updating it transparently when practices change.
